Taught to Hate

This post will be a quick one. What did you think of the film that was screened today? If you liked it, why? If not, also tell why? How could it have been made better? Don't just tell me that you liked it or not...but explain. I thought it was nice to have the filmmaker and one of the actresses on campus for questions.

Here is a link to the web page for the film: http://www.taughttohate.com/

And here is the trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j6YP7Q8Q2EI

  1. I thought the film was awesome. It really captured the point that you can't judge people based on their race alone. You need to know their background first, before you make any snap judgments. People nowadays are so quick to judge solely on appearances. First impressions can really kill you in society today, and it's pretty sad. I enjoyed how the film showed not only Antonio's background, but John's as well. John wasn't this delinquent gangbanger who came from a dis functional home. He seemed to be raised with good values and from a loving family. He just got so caught up in a stupid generalization of spanish people and went down the wrong path. I think things like this are what our society needs to begin to spark a change. I also thought it was nice that the filmmaker and one of the actresses was there. He was able to really convey the underlying meaning of why he made the film, which made it even more enjoyable. -Courtney T

  2. This movie was very personal to me as I was friends with those kids that attacked the man in patchogue that this movie was based off and it show a lot of the truth to the events that went on that night. The boys didn't know the guy personally and didn't know his home life and still they attacked him based on his skin color. I work with to people that are from a Spanish speaking country and one of them while taking the 10minute walk home from our job was attacked and thank god he wasn't killed but I have seen what these senseless attacks do to people and it is all based on the color of there skin when in reality they are trying to do the same thing as everyone else and try and make a better life for thier family and I think this movie really showed that well

  3. I liked the film because it gave a different point of view of immagration that we don't really think of right away. The fact that people would kill people over jobs and money is absurd. Money is just money and their will be always another job. Of course this is a problem in our society today but it's been a problem since America was born, not only are the latin people of today being brought down, but years before the native americans, blacks, italians, irish, chinese, almost all cultures have gone through this and it hards to changes everyone opinion but i like that the director was at least trying to make an impact and change peoples views of immagration today.

  5. The movie really gave me a different perspective on the immigration in the US. I really liked it and felt that it really showed some issues with immigration and discrimination well. I thought it was smart of them to make you feel connected by giving you a family background of the immigrant in the movie. I couldn't help but get really mad when I saw the group of kids antagonize and harrass the foreigners and I thought how this is horrible that things like this are actually going on in our society. Everyone is a human being and its so wrong to not only harass but kill and physcically abuse others just because of their background. I enjoyed seeing the director and the actress after the movie. I really think he did a great job at trying to show a small part of this huge problem. I think it really made a impact on the people in the room.

  6. After watching the film Taught to Hate I realized how corrupt our society really is. It shouldnt matter of the race, color, or ethnicity you are; we are all human beings. Overall I thought this film was amazing and there are many life learned leasons that I could use in my life to help create a more open minded society. This movie was based upon the killings in Patchogue, and I knew all 7 kids that were involved. They were at the wrong place at the wrong time up to no good. They didnt commit the crime because they were against the man personally, but they didnt it because of their race which is wrong. The immigrants are just trying to make a better life for their family just like our ancestors did for us. Granted the immigration laws were much different back then, everyone had to learn the language.

  7. I thought that the film right on point. It's terrible how true everything about it was. Personally, i have been around people passing judgments on others because of what race they are. For a short film, it said A LOT. Most people are just trying to make a living for themselves and their families and there's nothing wrong with that. I agree with what the director of the film said, everyone complains about them taking jobs but i dont see any fighting for a position cutting someones grass or doing little work here and there for very little pay. If you want to ensure yourself a job- go get educated and get it. If you're really going to start trouble over a summer job that is willing to pay you pennies, then you really need to re-evaluate your life. I think people want to act tough, and they want to pretend like they are standing up for their country-but that definitely isnt it. I thought the film was great, and i hope it touches a lot of different audiences and helps people stop being so closed minded.

  8. I think the movie was great, i actually became a fan of them on facebook "http://www.facebook.com/pages/Taught-to-Hate/242007255924"...i like how it also added that the elders are the ones who are pushing these beliefs on the children of the younger generation...one major thing that i liked was that...individually one person could have such a vast affect on everyones thinking because the Uncle convinced the nephew then the nephew convinced all of his friends to "fix the problem" which in turn made it worse than it was

  9. I thought Taught to Hate was a good film. I think the director did a good job of painting a human face on American immigrants today. People lose site of how immigrants are people too and this film did a good job of showing people that regardless of citizenship status, most of these people are just trying to get by like the rest of us.

  10. I liked the film that filmed from different view points of the two groups. I also like how the ending situation was portrayed to just get out of hand and that the kids weren't out looking to kill any one how ever one thing led to another. The film was based on events that took place on long island I had actually read and discussed these events in a social issues class I took I was interesting to see the point of view and feelings of others on the topic.

  11. I thought the film was great. I think theres a huge problem with immigrants and the way the are treated. They work hard and do the jobs that we dont want to do, so know one can say they take them from us. I've seen other movies based off of immigration and ive always thought that they show a side of immigration that many people dont see. I think that the hate crime that this movie was based off of was horrible and the director did a good job with this movie

  12. I really enjoyed the movie that we saw. The part that I liked the most was the parts where they shot back to his family and his life in his country. I felt that by showing this we could connect to him on a personal level and actually grow feelings to why he wanted to come to America rather than judging him. I thought it was really cool that the film maker and actress were also there so we could ask them questions and hear what they had to say. I would definitely watch any of his other films because watching taught to hate really makes you think about how cruel people can be towards another human being.

  13. I thought that the film was very good. They made us realize that immigrants are actually people too and come here for a better life. They also come here for good reasons like to help out back at home. They are doing a good deed. I also liked this movie because it went to a local spot that made me realize it isclose by. This movie also did not focus on one side, but both. I also realized that hate crimes usually start from somewhere in the family or where someone looks up to. This is why you need to watch who you are trying to influence because they could end up listening and doing something that can make them end up in trouble.
