In Mexico we did not have the tradition of spring break when I was growing up; we had 2 weeks off from school, but we did not travel to a place where a bunch of young adults hung out with no supervision. We went to athletic games as teens with a few parents - never enough to keep an eye on all of us. We traveled, sometimes alone, to relatives or friends houses. It really wasn't that we were a bunch of uptight prudes; it was more that our parents would not have been very happy if we did things that would appear to be too sexual in nature. There is a saying, "no hagas cosas buenas que parezcan malas"...don't do good thing that appear to be bad. Our take was to do anything we wanted as long as it did appear to be bad! It amuses me that people go to Mexico to spring break just because we did not have that tradition.
Remember that Mexico is a big country. There are parts of the US where you do not want to go, places where you would prefer to not wander around at 11 PM alone, and places where you feel absolutely safe. The same applies to Mexico. The majority of the country is pretty safe, but you should take some precautions whenever you travel.
At the moment there are a number of warning to avoid certain parts of Mexico because of ongoing drug wars. Despite this, you can have a lot of fun! This post is really just spelling out common sense.
First of all, most tourist resorts are really safe places: Cancun, the whole Riviera Maya, Puerto Vallarta, Acapulco, Zihuatanejo, Chichen Itza...the places travel agencies and many online sites like Expedia and Orbitz. A lot of these places have tours to nearby attractions. Many colonial cities are pretty safe. Anywhere you travel, use regular precautions: I was pickpocketed for the only time in my life in Boston! There are companies that specialize in adventure travel, and they also tend to be fine (if they make you sign a "Hold Harmless" clause, read carefully!).
At these places, your chances of being a crime victim are much smaller than your changes of contracted an STD (or getting pregnant), or getting sick from drinking too much. Also, avoid drugs...you don't want to be around the wrong kind of people.
It's also important to know what places you should avoid because of either turf wars among drug cartels or fights between dealers and authorities (the Mexican president has been really clamping down on the drug trade and they have been fighting back). The number one place is Cuidad Juarez, across the border from El Paso, TX. There have been multiple murders in this city, including an employee of the US consulate along with her husband. In general, staying away from the border is a good idea. The Pacific states of Michoacan and Sonora - both in green on the map - have also had problems with fighting among the drug cartels.
So if you can, go have fun and learn what you can! But be safe.
If you had the chance to go anywhere in Mexico (mentioned in this post or not) for spring break, where would you go? And why did you choose this place?
I know a lot of people that have visited Cancun. I've seen a lot of pictures from their vacations and Cancun looks beautiful. They stayed at a resort that had daily excursions. If i were to visit Cancun i would definitely only stay where the resort allowed so I wouldn't run into trouble with the bad parts of Mexico. I think it would be interesting to see the part of Mexico that isn't based upon tourism to see the real Mexico. But I wouldn't want to be in a bad area.
ReplyDeleteIf I had to choose to go anywhere in Mexico for spring break I would choose Cancun. Cancun is known for partying and is one the of hot spots for spring breakers. My parents have gone there multiple times and from the pictures they have taken it seems like it is a very nice place. I would have went over the summer but I was not allowed with the fear of getting the swine flu. If I were to go I would only do the all inclusive package so I would not have to go far beyond the resort. By doing this I would not need a lot of money to carry around and my change of being mugged would be much less. Generally the tourist areas are the better places to be since they try and keep these areas the cleanest keeping tourists coming back each year. One thing I have learned from experience is that many times in these tourists areas they try to rip you off when buying things knowing that you will not leave the tourist area.
ReplyDeleteDuring spring break i like to go to st. thomas its just a beautiful island to go to. i mean last time i went i went on a cruise boat and only got to spend a day there walking around in the small towns or doing what ever the ship had planed as excurisions but i would deffiently like to go back one day but not on a cruise i would like to fly there and maybe stay the week or two becasue the people are nice and just being on that island has such a great relaxing atmosphere that you cant help but want to come back as soon as you can
ReplyDeleteIf i could chose a place to go for spring break it would be Rivera Maya. Years ago i stayed at an All Inclusive resort with my family and till this day it is the most incredible week we all have ever had. I met people from all over the world who i still keep in touch with. The resort was very secure and safe and everyone there was very friendly! we had a great time eating, dancing, swimming with dolphins, playing beach volleyball and doing anything you could imagine! I would love to go back with friends and hope to have the same experience a second time! It was so beautiful!

I would love to visit Cancun. It is by far the most popular city that I have heard of in Mexico. My friend had actually visited over her spring break she said it was beautiful and the water is so clear. I have never been a huge fan of beach vacations but for Cancun it would be easy to make an exception.
ReplyDeleteI would choose Cancun as my spring break spot in Mexico. I know that this is a very common place where people my age go for spring break. I would also know that it would be fun and it is a great spot. I know many people that went and they all come back home with crazy stories. The stories makes me actually want to go there. There are also a lot of resorts. I also know it would be easy to find one as long as i tried to book it in advanced.
ReplyDeleteFor spring break I would love to go to Cancun or Cabo San Lucas. I know those are both popular spring break destinations and I've seen alot of pictures from those places, and they look gorgeous. I remember one season on that show Laguna Beach they went to Cabo and it looked amazing. I was so jealous and wished I was there with them. A couple of years ago I went on a cruise to Cozumel and I loved it there! It was so beautiful so I wouldn't mind going there again. -Courtney T
ReplyDeleteI have always wanted to go to Cancun. It sounds like a great vacation spot. My parents have gone there twice and from their pictures and stories it sounds beautiful. From all the spring break shows on TV and all the stories that my friends have told me it looks like there is plenty of interesting things to do over there. I want to go to over the summer and see all of the beautiful things for myself. I just don't want to run into a bad neighborhood in Mexico. I don't ever want to get in the middle of the drug wars that are happening. Other than tat i can't wait to visit Mexico and especially Cancun.
ReplyDeleteI would def go back to Cancun in a heartbeat for a spring break. I went with about 13 of my friends for our senior trip after high school. We weren't alone because we also traveled there with other schools on long island. The hotel we stayed at was called the Gran Caribe Real. We had so much fun! We also add the all inclusive package which was great because the only money we had to really carry with us was for tipping and souvenirs. We went to many different clubs, restaurants, shops, and bars. The beaches were beautiful and we could not get ourselves out of the crystal clear "blue gatorade" water. The one thing I would visit when I go back would be probably monuments, old structures, or statues nearby because I find that sort of stuff really interesting. One day there my friend and I took a cab and wanted to go to a nearby flea market. But instead we went to one about 30 minutes away and it was a bit scary. People come up to you like it is nothing and ask you if you want drugs. My friend and I were baffled and felt unsafe and we sortly left and went back to the hotel. But other than that I love Cancun and would go back anyday!
ReplyDeletewell ive never been on vacation anywhere in mexico before but iver heard and seen pictures from my friends who have went there and its beautiful.I would love to go to Cancun or Cabo San Lucas, ive had so many friends go there and theyve all told me its amazing. but they have also told me that its best to do all inclusive because it save you alot of money and they've also told me to stay at the resort and not to really leave them. Hopefully i will be able to go and see these places myself and see how beautiful they are.
ReplyDeleteThe serious drug violence problem in Mexico began because of the signing of NAFTA. After NAFTA was signed, tons of acres apon acres of farm was abandoned because American subsidised foods flooded the Mexican market. This left tons of land for drug cartels to grow massive quantities of product, making them now the number one supplier of drugs to America. Meanwhie, he Mexican justice system is too corrupt to limit the problem in anyway.
ReplyDeleteI have not been to Mexico, but i would love to go to cancun with my boyfriend soon, but i never leave the resort, because i have heard that there are bad parts of mexico that you would not want to be already with out reading this article. I would choice this place because spring break is a party area and its a very beautiful resort area to vacation, my friend went there and she said it was the best time she ever had.
