Pablo Picasso was a very well known Spanish painter, and some of his works are in NYC at the MOMA. Many of his paintings are Cubist - a style where objects are not shown whole, but are broken up and reassembled to allow the viewer to see them from more than one perspective at a time.
The painting here is titled Guernica, after a city that was bombed during the Spanish Civil War. The small city (5000-7000) people was destroyed in 1937, in what many believe was a senseless act of violence. If you look at the image here, you will notice people screaming and animals also suffering. Cubism is a very appropriate style to denote the horrors of war.
You can search his images on the web, but here is a link to a small selection: http://www.artinthepicture.com/artists/Pablo_Picasso/.
Another painter from Spain who is well known is Salvador Dali, who was a surrealist. Surrealist works offer an element of surprise and unexpected images set together. Surrealism.org defines it as "Surrealism style uses visual imagery from the subconscious mind to create art without the intention of logical comprehensibility. "
This painting titled "The Persistence of Memory" is in the MOMA in NYC. If you are ever in St Petersburg, FL, stop by the Salvador Dali museum. Here is a link to a page with galleries of thumbnails of his work along with his bio - he was a very eccentric character!
Let's jump over the Atlantic now and take a look at Frida Kahlo, who has become pretty popular in the US. A few years ago, Salma Hayek produced and starred in a film, titled simply "Frida", and based on the painter's life. Many of her paintings are self-portraits. She also focuses quite a bit on her body and on medical aspects, perhaps because of an almost-fatal accident when she ws a teen. Here are her "Two Fridas".
On a somewhat irrelevant (and irreverent) side note, if you ever saw the movie Dodgeball, the one female dodgeball player was probably based on Frida, with the exaggerated features and the unibrow! Here is a link to her paintings: http://www.fridakahlofans.com/mainmenu.html.
Another Mexican painter was Diego Rivera, who was Frida's husband. He was a muralist, and as a painter, much more innovative when it came to style than his wife. Murals - or large paintings directly on the wall or the ceiling of a building - had been used in antiquity and during the renaissance, but the type of paint was unknown. In early 20th century Mexico, Rivera (and others) experimented until they found a type of paint that would hold up. Some of his enormous murals are very detailed, and show a preoccupation with social justice. Here is "Man at the Crossroads".
"
Rivera also painted smaller pictures, and sometimes you can catch one in the city. If you are interested in seeing a mural painted by one of the best know Mexican muralists, the New School for Social Research has some by Jose Clemente Orozco. A link to more info on Rivera is here:http://www.diegorivera.com/index.php.
The last painter here is the only one who is still alive of these 5. His work should look familiar, as you have seen one of his paintings in the text: Fernando Botero, from Colombia. His trademark is painting very fat people, and he is known for using a deceptively simple style to insert social criticism. This painting is titled "The Dancer". Here is a link to a youtube video with some of his work: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lI1rjytiZsM.
You can find info online for all of these painters. The Wikipedia site on Botero is not very good, but the others seemed better with a quick glance.
All five painters have very different styles, and they are very recognizable. My question to you is which is your favorite, and why? Tell me why you like the specific painter the best - and why you don't like the others as much.

Just off the news: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/art/art-news/7564884/Frida-Kahlo-painting-unseen-for-72-years-to-be-sold-at-auction.html
ReplyDeleteThe url is self-explanatory. The painting is unusual for Kahlo, as it focuses on a ancient idol.
Out of all of the artists listed her Salvador Dali would be my favorite. He is a Surrealist and his paintings offer an element of surprise and unexpected images set together. His painting is the most vivid out of all of the artists above and is somewhat abstract. I dont particually like Frida Kahlos painting because it is very bland and the colors to not pop out. It is very boring. Fernando Boteros painting portray fat people which is something I wouldnt want to look at in art. In Diego Riveras painting there is too many things going on at once and it is hard to tell what is in the painting. Pablo Picasso although very well known, I do not like the fact that his pictures are broken up into little pieces.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I don't like war and bloody paintings, I think my favorite painter would be the first one, Pablo Picasso. I like the fact that you have to think of what your seeing. I like how each individual that looks at that painting shown above can have a different view and opinion of whats going on. You can form your own interpretation and use your imagination. With the other painters, there work can also be interesting such as Fridah Kahlo because it looks like it has a deep meaning, yet it can be too easy to understand. Same as the other painters, its more obvious to see what is going on and what the painter was trying to get across. I think paintings are supposed to make you think and to be interpreted differently instead of having one obvious meaning.
ReplyDeletei think out of all the paintings and painters i like Diego Rivera or i think his name was Fernando Botero. the reason that i like Diego Rivera is that i like how much is going on in the murals alot of the painters have in my opinion boring paintings but with his big murals especially with his mural man at cross roads there is just so much to look at so much going on much like real life. I also like the painter Fernando Botero, he paints all these pictures of the cartoon over wieght people and i feel like his pictures just show people loving the life that they live and when you look at his works in some way you can connect to what is going on in the picture.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite painter was Diego Rivera. " Man at the Crossroads" seem like it would be the most difficult to paint. I also think that it looks the nicest. There are also many different types of things that are in the picture. I can look at it for a little bit without actually having to zone out or think about something else. The other paintings are all good, but to me it seems like they are focusing on one thing. I get easily sidetracked so i do not really get to see the real meaning out of them.
ReplyDeleteOut of these five my favorite would be Fernando Botero. His painting the dancer immediately caught my eye, and although I don't exactly know his meaning behind the painting to me it seems sweet and loving and that the couple showed dancing are truly enjoying there time together. I also like the fact that in most of his paintings the people shown are over weight and pudgy, not the beautiful and thin typical people seen in photos and paintings.
ReplyDeleteOut of the 5 painters my favorite would be Salvador Dali. I like that he's a surrealist painter because i feel surrealism is very interesting, unique and vivid. His paintings make me think and im in awe at how someone would even think to create something like that. I don't like Frida Kahlo's paintings at all. I think the girls are extremely ugly and the painting is boring and too simple for my liking. Picasso's paintings are alright. I've never really been a big fan of his. Some paintings are interesting, but overall i usually prefer more realistic paintings. Rivera's painting i do enjoy though. It's very detailed and you can tell he's extremely talented.
ReplyDeleteOf these painters I have to say that i do enjoy Picasso's work a lot. This semester i took an art history class and we looked at many of his paintings and there is something about them that always sticks out to me. I feel like his art is very unique. All his paintings are created with different types of figures, shapes and colors. I feel like he has a signature style of painting and i can almost recognize his work at first glance.
ReplyDeleteOut of these artists I'd have to say my favorite would be Diego Rivera. I like his work because I really enjoy murals and looking at so much detail. I also enjoyed Fernando Botero's work because it shows how larger people can do many things and be happy doing them just like a "regular" sized person would. The artist I did not really enjoy much was Frida Kahlo, I'm not sure really why but hers does not really catch my eye.. maybe because of the none detail in her work.
ReplyDeleteSalvador Dali is my favorite because it looks like a very unique styles...the others are as well but the melting clocks just make me think about what was being thought while it was being painted and what specific meaning he had behind it
ReplyDeletewell to start off im not really into art so much so it was hard for me to choose one i like and to explain them. I like the second one by Salvador Dali, its just different then the rest. it kind of reminds me of alice in wonderland as weird as that may be but its just different and i like things that are unusual. The rest were okay, i didnt get the one by Frida Kahlo it seemed kind of plain, but who am i to say i dont know a thing about art.
ReplyDeleteOut of all the painters and paintings i would have to pick as my favorite, Pablo Picasso. He has one of the most unique if not the most unique painting styles i have ever seen. You really have to look and study his paintings to find the true meaning behind them. You really have to study them to figure out and interpret what they are. He combines different shapes and colors to make the paintings really light up. He has been one of my favorite artists for a very long time. I love to just sit there and examine his paintings to see what i can interpret from them.
ReplyDeleteI almost saw this artist in California when her exhibit was in San Francisco. I think shes one of the best modern artists in all of North America. Sometimes her paintings are a little strange, but most of the time i enjoy them.
ReplyDeleteI like Pablo Picasso more than the other painters because theres so much to look at and you can see the painting for so many different perspectives, the painting also gives a sense of an emotional feeling. He expresses his feeling in the painting that most painters would never think of. I think he really thinks " out side the box" in his painting and that why he would be my most favorite because his paintings are wild and make me say wow....
ReplyDeleteI had to do a surrealist project for the new Dali museum opening up. I got in to it. Salvador Dali is my favorite artist. I think the messages he directs to the viewers are easy to understand. I also love his style and the little things he adds into his paintings, like the melting clocks.
ReplyDeleteSalvador Dali'spainting titled "The Persistence of Memory," is the one that I like best. His use of vivid imagery and color is very appealing.Frida Kahlo's painting titled "Frida" is somewhat plain, while the other two have more character. I prefer paintings of landscapes.
