Spanish in the USA

One of the cultural segments in the text this week covers the Hispanic influence in the US. From names of cities (El Paso, Los Angeles, San Francisco), to food (tacos, burritos, tortillas), to Latin music, the influence is notable. Sometimes it's regional, for example there is a stronger Mexican influence in the Southwest while here on Long Island it is traditionally more Caribbean-based, with Puerto Ricans and Dominicans. In the city, there is a little bit of everything - and for me, that is one of the biggest benefits of being so close to NYC.

I'd like to open up this part of the blog by asking one of two things. The first is an open invitation to discuss Latin Culture in the US - very open topic, so have fun! The second is a more pointed question. How will Spanish help you, either with the job you have now or the jobs you are planning for the future? Does it tie in with your major?

  1. I am currently studying Business and hope that one day I will be a very successful business man. Spanish is becoming more and more important with regards to business. Learning Spanish will enable me to better communicate with Spanish speaking employees or co-workers. It would be nice to be able to offer my product or service to the 350 million people whose first language is Spanish. In North America, Hispanic consumers are the fastest-growing market segment. As for job opportunities, it certainly wouldn't hurt to have Spanish on your resume. In the United States, knowing Spanish can be particularly helpful. Increasingly, businesses are employing more and more Spanish speaking workers. One thing is certain and if you are bilingual, you will be more marketable and have more career choices. Globalization, with it's accompanying free trade agreements is shrinking the business world, and those who know more than one language will definitely have the edge.

  2. spanish will help me because many people now a days just know how to speak spanish. I can commmunicate to these people without having to ask someone to translate. It is also becoming a very important language because most people are bilingual. Job employers are also looking for people that can speak spanish and see it as an advantage if you can speak spanish. Spanish does tie in with my major which is liberal arts. My major says that i have to take some languages and i thought that spanish was one of the most important languages

  3. I think that latin culture in the U.S. is great..its a lot of fun to join in on other cultures and learn from them. I enjoy the music whether im out, in my car or just listening to the radio. The foot is also outstanding, and since i am from italy- i like taking part in more than one culture. Spanish will help me in the future because i am a language major and one day hope to teach both italian and spanish. The two languages are so similar yet so different and i look forward to being able to one day speak them both fluently. In the process of mastering the languages, i hope to one day be able to study aborad i both italy and spain to put my education to the test and see if i could go weeks only speaking either language.

  4. I think spanish is a great trait to have in any job or business. I'm currently studying nursing and of course speaking spanish would be helpful. In 2007 Spanish was the primary language spoken in households by over 34 million people. The chances of a patient coming in that could only speak spanish are very high, and being able to communicate with a patient would be vital for their health.

  5. Knowing how to not only speak spanish but to also understand it can really be useful for anyones future. I know that a lot of jobs or careers look for people that can speak fluent or understand spanish well. I think that if your interviewing for a job and you know spanish, and other people who are also interviewing for the same job who don't know spanish, they have a lesser chance of getting the job. Since spanish is becoming more popular in the US because of immigrants I think that many jobs look for people to know it. I'm majoring in liberal arts with a english emphasis. Knowing spanish can help my major because if i became an ESL (english second language) i would have to know spanish to communicate.

  7. There is alot of Latin culture in the U.S. and since we do live so close to NYC it is important to know how to communicate in spanish some what because latin culture is everywhere. I work in a doctors office, there always must be at least one person in our office to speak spanish or else it gets very confussing if theres no one their to help them. You can't run a doctors office with out proper communication because being sick is a very seriously thing and you have to know exactly what their saying or else you could really mess things up. Knowing spanish would help me with my career, since im in this type of field.

  8. I enjoy the fact that the U.S. is such a diverse place and how there is a lot of Latin culture here. It's nice to learn new things from other people. I want to become a kindergarten teacher so learning Spanish will definitely help me. There are a lot of families out there who speak Spanish, so by me knowing how to speak it as well, I will be able to communicate with parents and the children as well. I'm sure most of the children who will be in my class will know how to speak English but a big part of kindergarten is parental involvement. Sure the child might have learned English, but the parents might not have since they spoke it their entire lives. I would be able to communicate how well or poorly their child is doing, certain homework directions and scheduled trips. It will definitely help create less confusion with my job and make it easier.

There are many different benefits to knowing how to speak and understand different languages especially Spanish. Spanish is becoming so popular now a days and if everyone knew how to speak it,. it would be a lot easier to communicate. I like Mike am also studying business and knowing Spanish would be very beneficial. I am going to be studying sports management and now in the world of sports there are so many athletes that speak Spanish that it would be a lot easier to communicate with them.

  10. Right now I am taking my liberal arts electives at Suffolk Community College and once I am finished with that I will be attending Farmingdale. I want go into the dental hygiene course and then eventually after I graduate I want to go back to school to become an oral surgeon. Working in a dental office knowing both english and spanish is very important. We get many different people who speak different languages and it is definitely a plus to know another language. A lot of the time a person who knows more languages will get the job. The dental office I used to work in was very open to people speaking different languages because it made our patients more comfortable and relaxed. Some people in our office spoke spanish, italian, russan and polish. It was so interesting to hear everyone speak in different languages.

  12. Speaking Spanish could possibly tie into my major someday. I major in history but i plan on focusing on Latin American studies. It could be beneficial to be able to read Spanish, possibly to read primary sources. I also am leaving open the possibility of getting into Latin American politics someday, so it would definitely come in handy.
